Second Session in Review

Launching the second day of the 90th Kansas FFA Convention was the second general session held in McCain Auditorium. Many achievements were highlighted for individual members, teams, and chapters. In addition, members and guests heard from speakers, including state treasurer, Quentin Umphenour and national FFA vice president, Gracie Furnish. The following are the highlights from the session.

The Atchison County, Inman, Junction City, La Crosse, Lyndon, Marais des Cygnes Valley, Skyline, Southwestern Heights, Valley Heights, and Wellington FFA chapters were presented with grants from the Kansas Farm Bureau to support community agriculture programs.

The ranking of the gold division chapters in the National Chapter–Building Communities division was revealed. Southwestern Heights FFA chapter took the top spot, ranking first.

For their performance of opening ceremonies, the Sabetha FFA chapter won first in the Ritual Demonstration Leadership Development Event.

Quentin Umphenour delivered the state treasurer’s retiring address. Read the speech “Take It From Home.”

The Kansas FFA Foundation Board of Trustees were recognized for their commitment to the success of Kansas FFA.

Ten members received recognition for the leadership information test. The test assessed the knowledge of FFA and agricultural education of members throughout the state and these members were the top ten. In tenth place, Ridge Pracht from the Anderson County. Tied for eighth place, Shyle Scheckel, from Anderson County and Aaron Ensz, from Buhler. Tied for sixth place, Ethan Goff, from Girard and Max Harman from Inman. In fifth place, Mary Zimmerman from Girard. Tied for third place, Jessica Brynds from Girard and Hayden Schaff from Uniontown. And, tied for first place Ambrosia Carlton from Buhler and Taylor Brynds from Girard.

A group of FFA members was recognized for receiving state SAE grants, which are sponsored by Harris Crop Insurance. From the Blue Valley FFA chapter: Bri Holle, Elizabeth Wright, and Brooklyn Zoeller, from the Goessel FFA chapter, Emily Meier, and representing the Spring Hill FFA chapter, Kate Schoenberg. Another group of students received SAE grants from the National FFA Organization. From the Blue Valley FFA chapter, Grace Lee, from the Buhler FFA chapter, Jacob Milburn, from the Chetopa FFA chapter, Dakota Pease, from the Pike Valley FFA chapter, Brody Calgren, from the Riverton FFA chapter, Tyler Larison, from the Satanta FFA chapter, Christopher Wagner, and from the Spring Hill FFA chapter, Emily Dowd. The grants will be used to further the SAE programs.

The Kansas Association of Agriculture Educators’ (KAAE) announced the finalists of the KAAE Essay Contest. Lukas Sebesta from the Ellsworth FFA chapter, Tess Fairbanks from the Onaga FFA chapter, Laura Krohn from the Onaga FFA chapter, Travis Lutz from the Ottawa FFA chapter, and Abigail Johnson from the Southeast of Saline FFA chapter were all finalist.

Gracie Furnish, national FFA eastern region vice president delivered her special remarks to the Kansas FFA convention goers.

The first half of the state proficiency award winners were recognized on stage from Equine Science Entrepreneurship to Wildlife Production & Management. The second half of the proficiency winners will be highlighted in the third session.

The second session acted as the official start of the day but many other events took place Thursday morning. The Agriscience Fair began, the SAE Fair is open in the K-State Student Union, and several Leadership Development Event finals were held.
